Wellington Rowing Club and Onslow College rower Hayden Robertson was on Saturday named in the NZ Junior team to travel to Rio de Janiero for the Junior World Championships taking place on 6 to 9 August.
Saturday’s announcement followed a week-long trialling process on Lake Karapiro which consisted of an erg test, seat racing and time trials. Hayden will be competing in both a pair and a double at the regatta and heads to Karapiro to train with the other NZ Junior representatives for the weeks leading into the Champs.
Hayden began rowing for Onslow College in 2010 and since then has had many successes. Over the years he has picked up four Maadi medals (one being a gold in the B U17 1x) and four North Island Secondary Schools medals. He was selected into the U18 North Island squad in both 2013 and 2014 and this season came away from the Maadi Cup with a silver medal in the B U18 1x.
Hayden’s NZ Junior selection is a fantastic achievement and represents both a challenge and an opportunity. All the best for the regatta Hayden and congratulations from everyone at WRC!
